AbstractThe study aims at investigating the effectiveness of teaching by.
the strategy of similarities in visual thinking skills in the principles of biology by the first intermediate class students. To verify the aim of the study, an experiment is carried out in the second course of the academic year 2011-2012 for two months from 1-3 to 1-5 for the first intermediate class students in Al-Amal intermediate school for boys which belongs to the educational institution in Al-Diwaniya. Two sections are arbitrarily chosen. Section A represents the experimental group which consists of 25 students who studied according to the strategy of similarities. Section B represents the control group which consists of 26 students who studied according to the traditional method. These two groups are equivalent in age, intelligence, the pre-achievement (mid year) of the biology subject, skills of visual thinking. The researchers depend on experimental design with partial control and the intruded variables are controlled. After finishing the experiment, the results are statistically analyzed by using T- test for two independent samples. The results show the preeminence of the experimental group students on those of the control group in the visual thinking skills test. In view of the findings of the study, the researchers recommend the following:
1. Including the strategy of similarities in the syllabus (teaching method) of the department of biology in the college of education for the students to know it throughout qualifying them for teaching .
2. The biology curriculum should include a lot of paintings, pictures, illustrating forms in an easy way which summarizes the biological concepts and consequently keeping the information for a long time.
