Sociolinguistic Features and English Language Usesinsome Non-native and Developing Countries

Yassin Mohamed Ali Ibrahim

Journal of Al-qadisiya in arts and educational sciense, 2010, Volume 10, Issue 3, Pages 3-16

In this paper three important tasks have been looked at: presenting the relationship between language and society from the sociolinguistic perspective in non-native and developing countries; the impact of culture and other social factors on the communication of people in those countries; and the nature of English language communication across cultures as being difficult or easy. Drawing on examples from some references in sociolinguistics and public discourse in those countries, many sociolinguistic features have been highlighted which will be invaluable for researchers wishing to understand the many different factors that underlie the shaping of the nature of sociolinguistic features and English language uses in those non-native and developing countries. The following paragraphs address the above three tasks so evidently and finally highlight the conclusions of this paper.

Discourse Analysis and English Language Teaching :A Functional Perspective

Muhannad Abbas Mit

Journal of Al-qadisiya in arts and educational sciense, 2010, Volume 10, Issue 3, Pages 39-50

This paper aims at manifesting the role of Discourse Analysis in English Language Teaching from a Functional Perspective. Most of the research to date has been concerned with discourse analysis as an alternative method for understanding language cognition process. In this paper the concern will be on how functional properties of sentential elements (interrogatives will be taken as an example) act as prompts to hearers in different contexts, to facilitate the integration of on-line information. In addition, discourse analysis is a methodological tool, which easily lends itself to the investigation of the functional properties of talk, developmental process as well as discrimination by identifying social attitudes and ideologies responsible for observed linguistic patterns. Most teachers have a tendency to teach language in isolation with its use. As a result, the context is lacking and when it is time to practice the things they have learned in real life situations the students fail to use the language and find it difficult to recognize the function of the utterance guided by the speaker.

The Bail in Legal Babylonian Texts

Journal of Al-qadisiya in arts and educational sciense, 2010, Volume 10, Issue 3, Pages 119-131

The bail in ancient Babylonian times is
considered to have been one of the main and
important insurances in the field of transactions.
It is meant by bail that a person guarantees the
debtor so that a creditor can pay back his loan.
If the debtor breaches the items of the contract
on the day of payment, the sponsor will be
responsible for paying it back instead of the
debtor. It is obvious that ancient Iraqis had two
types of bails: a bail on the guaranteed person
obliging the sponsor to bring him at a limited
time, otherwise he will be liable for the debt. As
for the bail on wealth, if the wealth is property,
such as grains, it should be specified according
to quality and weight. If it is something used
instead of money, such as silver, the amount
that the sponsor had to pay should be specified
when the debtor breaches his contractual
obligations. There had been one or several
sponsors for one guaranteed person, or on the
contrary, one sponsor for several debtors. The
bail in the Babylonian law aroused many
discussions among the modern researches;
however, its basic characteristic was to present
aid to the debtors by allowing who presents
financial insurances or attending personally
until the debtor performs his contractual
obligations, and this is an easy matter to deal
with and easy to ratify many contracts. In spite
of the difference in time between the bail
contracts in ancient Iraq and those of the recent
times, which is about five thousand years, the
legal rules in both communities, the ancient and
the modern one, many be approximate, for the
forms and rules followed by the ancient
Babilonian community are still applicable in
modern Iraq. This assures the vitality of the
ancient Babylonian community and its deep
thought as well as the highly developed legal
principles which prevailed in it.

"Beyond the Mask" : A Study in the Functions of the Mask in W.B. Yeats 's The Dreaming of the Bones, Luigi Pirandello's Henry IV and Jean Genet's The Blacks

Amaal Jassim Muhammed

Journal of Al-qadisiya in arts and educational sciense, 2010, Volume 10, Issue 3, Pages 17-38

The mask, a device as old as the drama itself, is a central component of several modern plays by W. B. Yeats, Luigi Pirandello and Jean Genet. Although for different reasons and in profoundly different ways each seeks to dramatize through it what it could not be expressed without it. Yet the presence of the mask in their plays, whether as a metaphorical concept or an actual use, delineates two fundamental aspects of modern drama: first the desire to create a "work of art" on the stage that has a ritual significance, secondly the modernists' propensity to dramatize philosophical and psychological ideas. So the intent of the present paper is to investigate the signification of the use of mask in W.B. Yeats 's The Dreaming of the Bones, Luigi Pirandello's Henry IV and Jean Genet's The Blacks. With his weariness, regret, embarrassment and longing, J. Alfred Prufrock announces the moral "self-effacement"1 of modern age. Spiritually exhausted, he is forced to project a persona, to put on a mask. Prufrock suffers the modern soul's dilemma : an inability to activate thought, a failure to transform words into action. He wears a mask neither comic nor tragic.
